SV Jazz Ensembles receive superior ratings

Students perform at local jazz festival and adjudication

Last month, members of the SV Jazz Ensemble I performed at the Slippery Rock University Jazz Festival and Adjudication. The ensemble performed for two adjudicators and received written comments, a rating and a personalized clinic following the performance.

The SV Jazz Ensemble I received a superior rating (the highest rating) from both adjudicators. Comments included high praise for intonation, solos, balance and musical maturity. Headlining this year’s festival was guest artist Matthew Whitacker. Matthew is a Grammy winning piano player who can be heard on many recordings of the highly acclaimed “8-bit Big Band.” Students then attended instrument specific masterclasses and a clinic with Mr. Whitacker. His energy was infectious, and he brought wonderful insights.

The event concluded with an SRU Jazz Ensemble concert featuring Mr. Whitaker. Students are led by Varden Armstrong and Bob Babick, secondary instrumental teachers.
