Curiosity, collaboration and career exploration were at the heart of a powerful learning experience for 45 Seneca Valley High School students who visited the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center on January 23.

Accompanied by Senior High School Assistant Principal Ms. Megan Lizewski and AP Chemistry teacher, Science Department Chair and Science Honor Society adviser Ms. Kelly Weston, students spent the day immersed in an environment where science, innovation and compassion intersect.

During their visit, students toured the facility and gained firsthand insight into the cutting-edge research taking place behind the scenes. Along the way, they met a variety of professionals who shared their unique roles within the center.  From researchers and physicians to therapists, nurse practitioners, medical physicists, directors and community outreach educators, students gained a deeper understanding of the diverse and often unexpected careers that make the center’s work possible.

Perhaps most impactful were the personal stories shared by the professionals. Students learned that there is no single path into healthcare. Each speaker described a different journey highlighting careers many students had never realized existed, let alone existed within one organization like UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

The experience brought classroom concepts to life, helping students see how what they learn today can shape the careers they pursue tomorrow. By connecting science education to real-world applications, the visit sparked curiosity, expanded perspectives and inspired many students to consider futures in healthcare and medical research.
