Survivors and family members from the Tree of Life tragedy share their stories with students

Students gathered to hear from Tree of Life Synagogue shooting survivors and family

Monday, Oct. 27, marked seven years since the tragic shooting that took place at the Tree of Life synagogue. In an effort to further educate students and confront the realities of hate, Remember, Educate and Combat Hate (REACH), the 10.27 Healing Partnership’s Speakers’ Bureau, visited Seneca Valley Intermediate High School on Wednesday, Oct. 29, to share their powerful, personal stories with students.

The speakers included survivors and family members who lost loved ones in the October 27, 2018 synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh. They recounted their firsthand experiences with hate-fueled violence and later participated in a Q&A session with students. Among those who shared their stories were Ms. Peg Durachko, Ms. Carol Black, Mr. Stanley Mallinger and Mr. Alan Mallinger.

As students learned about the tragedy, they created a butterfly mural along the hallway to honor the victims.  A heartfelt gesture of remembrance and hope, the mural featured powerful tributes, uplifting messages and personal pledges to stand against hate. After the discussion, many students stayed to ask thoughtful questions and speak with the family members.

REACH engagements enhance antisemitism curriculums and help to translate modern day hate from an abstract concept to a real event. By sharing their stories, REACH speakers provide educational experiences highlighting the impact of modern-day antisemitism and create powerful connections that result in deepened learning.
