“Carmina Burana” is one of the largest and most popular works of all time. When Carl Orff composed this multi-movement work, he based his instrumental music off of a set of poems from the 13th century. Orff envisioned this work to be “staged” and contain numerous elements of art.
The powerful, energetic music and poems were narrated by Senior High School Faculty members Ms. Allison Shuster and Mr. Jim Lucot, and students from SVAOC Performing Arts Department danced to two of the most beautiful movements of the piece using all original ballet choreography. Additionally, the art department displayed and projected images and sculptures that captured the essence of each movement.
“I am thrilled by the ‘art’ that was created and displayed at the event,” stated Seneca Valley Music Teacher Mr. Robert Matchett. “This collaboration is evidence of the passion of our educators, the true talents of our students, and the wonderful array of programs we offer here at SV. The performance of ‘Carmina Burana’ at Seneca Valley is one that will stay close to my heart forever.”
A complete work of art
For the first time in school history, the Seneca Valley Wind Ensemble, Art Department and the Seneca Valley Academy of Choice (SVAOC) Performing Arts Department (Dance), collaborated to present a monumental work of art on May 5.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students and community members included poetry, dance, art and music that are based on a transcription of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana.”
