A Lesson in Germs
Hand washing and proper coughing and sneezing techniques are vital in controlling the spread of communicable diseases, including common colds and the flu. An age appropriate lesson in developing these skills is offered at the elementary and secondary levels with video, lecture and hands on teaching. The students are instructed in the technique of coughing or sneezing into the fabric of the sleeve as well as practice in hand washing with “glo-germ” (an artificial germ lotion that glows under black light when not completely washed off). The children learn as well as have a fun lesson that leaves a lasting impression.
Reminders for at home:
- Remind your children to wash hands frequently, especially before eating and after using the bathroom.
- Teach children to cough and sneeze into a tissue or sleeve of the elbow.
- Make sure your child is getting enough sleep.
- Provide your child with a healthy diet complete with a daily breakfast.
- Keep children home from school if they have large amounts of nasal drainage, persistent cough, or fever over 100 within the past 24 hours.
