SV gets an assist from the Pens

Shipments coming into the Seneca Valley School District last spring were a cross between Christmas morning and winning the Stanley Cup. That’s because they were boxes from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation with over $115,000 in products to benefit K-6 students across the District.

The district’s six schools were the recipients of nearly 1,000 total items, including robotic, engineering, invention and construction kits, Kindles, microphones, extensive video equipment, Snap circuit sets, and Arduino boards, just to name a few.

“We are fortunate to be gifted with such state-of-the-art creative and innovative materials,” said Dr. Sean McCarty, Assistant Superintendent for K-6 Instruction. “Partnerships with such organizations like the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation will provide incredible academic benefits for our students for many years to come.”

The products can now be seen in our Creativity, Innovation and Research Centers (CIRCs), an immersive space found in each of our K-6 schools. The activities in CIRC are designed to empower children to use their innate sense of creativity to solve real world problems. These generously donated products, along with the CIRC curriculum, will teach students vital 21st century skills by engaging in collaborative and problem-based learning opportunities of their own design.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has had a tremendous impact on our student experiences in the CIRC space,” stated Haine Middle School Librarian/CIRC Teacher Eric Fogle. “Our students now have the tools necessary to take complex coding and make it tangible. Our youngest students can connect abstract circuitry knowledge they learn in science classes with the Snap circuit kits. In addition, with the incorporation of the Finch and Hummingbird Robotics kits, our upper elementary and middle school students can use the coding programs they've used in years past and code new robots with ease. All of the products that have been donated strengthen and support the hands-on learning that happens in CIRC on a daily basis.”

The mission of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is to actively promote physical well-being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education and provide essential life skills to young people in our community through youth hockey and other activities. According to the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation website, the organization has always been noted for their generous contributions to the surrounding communities. As noted on the site, “We understand the importance of our fans and the role that we collectively play in the development of the region.”

Fun Fore All donates to SV Foundation

Seneca Valley staff and Rowan students have much to look forward to, thanks to Fun Fore All.

Fun Fore All Donation to CIRC

This locally owned family fun park recently donated $5,000 to the Seneca Valley Foundation (SVF). Specifically, the contribution will be split with $2,500 going to the Creativity, Innovation and Research Center (CIRC) space at Rowan Elementary School and $2,500 that will be used for five teacher mini-grants. Chris Camp, president and owner at Fun Fore All in Cranberry Township presented the check to Rowan Elementary students and staff on Feb. 28, 2018.

“We are excited to be working with the district to help the students, teachers and staff,” said Mr. Camp. “Seneca Valley is doing some great work keeping students engaged in learning.

By using technology, as well as creativity, they are helping students become prepared for the new work environment that awaits them. As a long-time member of the community, we are happy to be able to support these great programs.”

Giving Back to Cranberry Township, Inc. is a foundation arm of Victory Family Church (VFC) in Cranberry Townshi

Give Pack Donation
p. Every year, they work to raise funds to purchase backpacks that are amply filled with school supplies for nearly 1,000 SV students who are identified as economically disadvantaged.

This year, additional funds were left over from the foundation’s backpack fundraising efforts, so they generously donated $2,500 of it for future equipment purchases that will assist with the Creativity, Innovation and Research Centers (CIRC) at CVE and Evans City schools.

Dr. Sean McCarty, assistant superintendent, is seen here on left, accepting the check from Matt Gates, pastor at VFC and executive director of The Giving Back Foundation. We thank them for their continued support of Seneca Valley!
