Adventures in World History (Cyber) Syllabus
Mr. Conlon
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Adventures in World History provides students with the opportunity to study civilizations and events that have shaped our modern world. The time frame of the course will include prehistory through 1500 C.E. This course will explore the relationship between physical geography and the development of human culture and civilization. Students will examine political, cultural, and religious changes that have taken place throughout this time period. This course will provide a foundation for future social studies courses.
GRADING
Follow the grade given in Edgenuity. Here is an explanation of the grading system:
OVERALL GRADE: The grade you have acquired thus far in the course, based on all activities and assessments you have completed:
COMPLETE COUNT: Indicates the percent of the course completed calculated by: the number of assignments completed vs. the total number of assignments in the course (this number may be slightly different than the Course Completed percentage)
ACTUAL GRADE: Represents the overall grade in relation to the percentage of coursework completed vs. the percentage of coursework that should have been completed
This grade is lower than the Overall Grade if you are behind in the course and will be the same as the Overall Grade if you are on-time or ahead of schedule in the coursework
RELATIVE GRADE: Represents the grade that you would receive if you stopped working in that course today and completed no more activities or assessments
**Please note that for all assignments, Edgenuity will provide an immediate grade. This grade is not final until I have a chance to check through the work. The grade given by the system will often be changed by me, especially for assignments with a writing component. Because the program is looking for key words and not getting a complete understanding of what you are writing, it will often erroneously give a 0% or 100% grade when something else is appropriate. If you have an issue with a grade AFTER I have checked it, please let me know.
COURSE EXPECTATIONS
We suggest you put in 3.5 hours per week, but you are required to put in at the very least 2.5 hours per week for each course. If you do not fulfill this requirement you will be referred to the attendance officer and for possible truancy and your parents will be notified. Please know that this is on average, so if you work extra long one week and less the next, this is not a problem. It only becomes an issue when you choose to log very little time repeatedly.
COURSE STRUCTURE
Your course will be split up into Units. Each Unit will have separate Topics. Within each Topic you will be expected to watch the lecture, take notes, and complete the following:
-
Journal Activities
-
On-Line Activities
-
Quizzes
At the end of each Unit you will have a topic Test covering all of the Topics. You will also have a Cumulative Exam at the end of each semester.
Here is a rundown of what we will be covering:
-
Beginnings of Human Society
-
Early Civilizations
-
Egypt, India, China
-
-
New Empires
-
Greece, Rome, Rise of Islam
-
-
Middle Ages
-
Renaissance and Reformation
PLAGIARISM
Your Handbook states “a grade of “F” or zero will be awarded for any submitted work which is found to be the work of another (student, author, encyclopedia, internet, etc.) and subsequent offenses will be dealt with accordingly.
COMMUNICATION
Remember, I am here to help you! If you have any questions about grading, course structure, expectations, or anything else, please contact me via e-mail. To do this, you should follow the “e-mail teacher” prompts when logged into your history course in Edgenuity.
If you are having trouble getting ahold of me through Edgenuity, you can e-mail me at conlonmj@svsd.net. Please try to use the Edgenuity e-mail application first, however, as it helps me to keep track of my cyber students separate from my classroom students.
Finally, if you are on campus, I would love to meet you face to face. My classroom is in room 220 of the Middle School on the Secondary Campus.
My Cyber period is from 12:19-1:01 on school days. I will be in my room at that time working to make sure everyone is up to speed. If you have any questions, please let me know. Have a great year!
