SENECA VALLEY PRESCHOOL

The Seneca Valley Preschool is part of the Senior High Child Development Program. High School students in this yearlong elective class act as good role models and enjoy working with the children.  Students in their course work study the growth and development of children from birth to age five. They use this information to assist in planning and teaching an age-appropriate preschool curriculum.

Children enrolled in the program must live in the Seneca Valley School District or have a parent who is employed by the school district. They should be three years old by September 1, 2014 and toilet trained.

The SV Preschool operates every week on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from mid-October to mid-May.  The children have a winter break during the first three weeks in January.  Times for morning and afternoon sessions are 8:30 to 10:30 and 11:30 to 1:30 respectively.  The cost for the school year is $180.

The preschool children participate in lessons focusing on early concepts in reading, math, and science.   Daily activities help develop fine and gross motor skills.  All lessons are taught around themes which encourage concept development.  Since the preschool is located in the Senior High School, the students frequently observe and study animals in the biology rooms, and sing in the chorus room.  They visit the school library for story time and are encouraged to check out books to read at home.

Both the morning and afternoon sessions are taught by three high school classes who stay with the children the entire year. The daily schedule includes:

1st Class:  Greet, help the children prepare for the day, and teach lessons.

2nd Class:  Facilitate social skills by playing with the children using classroom toys and games, teach lessons, and serve snacks.

3rd Class:   Finish snack time, teach lessons, and help the children get ready to go home.
