Seneca Valley School District

SV Preschool

Child Development is a Senior High School elective class. It is a yearlong commitment where students study the growth and development of children from birth to age five. Under my supervision, students assist in planning our curriculum for the SV Preschool program. At the same time, they learn to teach and work with the preschool children.

The high school students are seventeen and eighteen years old. Most of them are interested in pursuing careers in education and medicine or they just enjoy working with children. Many are involved in sports, band, chorus, and student government; these students are good role models for the children and take the class very seriously!

The SV Preschool is on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. It begins in the middle of October and ends in the middle of May. There is a winter break during the first three weeks in January, due to semester finals. The A.M. Preschool is from 8:30 to 10:30 and the P.M. Preschool is from 11:30 to 1:30.

During the course of each day, the preschoolers have 3 types of lessons: Language Arts (pre-reading skills), Science or Math and Art/Crafts (fine motor skill development). All lessons are taught around themes which help with concept development. Being located in a high school, we have the advantage of taking some wonderful on-campus field trips when it ties into our lessons. We visit the planetarium, see many varieties of animals in the biology lab, sing in the chorus room, and visit the library every Friday.

**Note that there are three classes of high school students who work with your children each day. The schedule is as follows:

Class #1: Greets the children, helps them to get ready for the day, and teaches a lesson.
Class #2: Plays with the children during a 15 minute free play (learning centers), teaches a lesson, and helps with snack.
Class #3: Helps the children clean up after snack and teaches a lesson.

The same students are with the children at these times for the entire year. Many great memories are made by both the high school students and the preschool children!

We provide pretzels and lemonade each day unless it is someone's "Special Day". Then, that child brings in a snack of their choice. We can make accommodations for food allergies; just let us know in advance!

More information on the program can be found on our web site,
